What Is A Termite?

Termites are insect pests that consume wood and live in nests or colonies similar to ants. Termites are often confused with ants but can be distinguished by their straight antennae, thick waists, and four equal-length wings (if they are even the type that has wings). To feed on cellulose, these insects burrow into the ground or into wooden structures to form colonies. If wood is not treated correctly or maintained, homes and the surrounding area can become prime breeding grounds for termites. These conditions attract termites away from their natural habitats and into developed areas. They create tunnels in wood and build mud tubes in the ground to travel throughout the colony and avoid exposure to air.
